The Party

So... Sam had a party at James' place and it went like this:

People drank.
People danced.
People talked.
People laughed.
People's nipples got tweaked (or rather Phil tweaked his OWN nipples).
People got spanked (but that's just cos Liz and Tiff were there).
The music blared and the cops did not come (making James' house the ideal party spot).
It was faaaaaaaabulous!

Cheers to Sam for having a birthday and to James for having a house!

Learn Cricket

Sorry, I laughed so hard when I saw this! Learn cricket from Willow and Stumpy! Get ready for the WORLD CUP! Cos I'm going to be waffling on about it for the duration!

Remember: I don't like cricket... I LOVE IT!

Howzit?!

I recently got an email (as did most of the rest of you) about a project that a certain ALT is conducting down in Joetsu! It didn't take much thought on my part to realise that "Howzit" was the (South African)word he was looking for. But being me, I wanted to give the dude an in-depth reason as to WHY we South Africans use this word with such regularity! I didn't find a reason, but I DID find the following hilarious article (written by a Texan).

Check it out

OMG

Okay I must be homesick because I cried BUCKETS when I found this!! I've been looking for this song for AGES! It SO reminds me of my last month at home (specially of Chevon, she kept singing "I will meet you at the reeever... I will meet you at the reeever!). I had the cd (Patrick now has it. He's had it for about two years now! So I'm thinking it's his now. Nevermind, anything to culturally enrich Mr Alaska) and this is my favourite song off the cd... a lovely little love song. Awww sniff...

After the Rain

Extremely talented group Freshly Ground with my favourite song of theirs, Nomvula ("after the rain" in Xhosa). Wish I could have found a better copy :(
This girl has an amazing voice! She makes singing seem so effortless! Love em, I have their cd! YAY!

Hallelujah and all that!

State of the Nation

So the president gave his State of the Nation address at the opening of Parliament on the 09 February.

Now as any South African will tell you, the nation is not in a great state at all! The main thing the people of South Africa were interested in was how strong a statement he would make against the violent crime in the country. Would he even acknowledge how very huge the problem is?!

A complete transcript of Mr. Mbeki's speech to be found here for anyone interested in reading it! A sample:
"Certainly, we cannot erase that which is ugly and repulsive and claim the happiness that comes with freedom if communities live in fear, closeted behind walls and barbed wire, ever anxious in their houses, on the streets and on our roads, unable freely to enjoy our public spaces. Obviously, we must continue and further intensify the struggle against crime."
Well duh...
A report on his speech here if you want to skip the long-windedness and get down to the chase.

Mid-year seminar

Sheesh, another year gone by! It was weird being at the mid-year seminar this year and looking for certain faces, only to realise that they'd all left... nevermind, there were OTHER familiar faces and even a few new ones! So it wasn't too bad... although Mary, Joyce, Nu, James, Vams, Hiten et al... you guys were sorely missed!

Anyway, so there were the usual workshops (I presented one, can you believe it?! Bottom of the barrel time), followed by the usual LOOOOOOOOONG, NEVERENDING speech, followed by the, by-now traditional, musical fundraiser at Shame! This year's theme was back-to-school (slightly creepy, when you consider that we're all teachers)... It was fun. But no tops came off this year, no dancing on the bar... no people dragging other people into closets to kiss them (as per 2004/5). It was all very tame and I found myself without a hangover on day two of the seminar for the first time in two years! Nice...

Some pics...

I've fallen and I can't get up...

So last Saturday I went to Myoko with Ros, Johanna and Kristen! The idea was to go snowboarding... and while that is what the other three wound up doing, I ended up doing a very classy version of butt-skiing (it's a new sport! It's the only way to get down a ski slope when you have a defective snowboard that you're just plain unable to stand up on!).

Sighhhhhhhhh... I had only two runs on the slope, because it took me a painstaking hour and a half to slide all the way down (on my arse, yeah) the first time and then another hour or so the second time! Although I did have more success on my second attempt, even with the constant falling down and hitting my head on the hard snow - which sucked! Every time I hit my head I saw stars and I ended up with a huge headache by the end of the day and a pretty damned sore neck the following morning (it still hurts a bit). I am now sporting a HUGE hand-sized bruise on my left inner thigh (I was pretty excited about that! It's proof that I worked really hard at that snowboarding lark, see?). All in all... I HATE giving up on anything, and I am determined to gain SOME kind of basic snowboarding skill, damn it!
