So, sometimes I just like to take pics of rice fields and dogs, so sue me!! These were taken in Higashi Sanjo (close to my Wednesday visit school)- soon to be my new home.
I just got this from Nuriatjie and since I haven't updated in a while, I thought this would be a nice filler. Must say, some of those are a tad exaggerated and unfair, but most are pretty spot on!! Had a giggle at some. For all you Saffers out there!
YOU ARE PROUDLY SOUTH AFRICAN WHEN:
Ø You produce a R100 note instead of your driver's licence when stopped by a traffic officer Ø You can do your monthly shopping on the pavement (lekker lekker tamaties mummy!!! - N) Ø You have to hire a security guard whenever you park your car Ø You can count the national soccer team's scores with no fingers Ø To get free electricity you have to pay a connection fee of R750 Ø Hijacking cars is a profession Ø You can pay your tuition fees by holding up a sign at a traffic light Ø The petrol in your tank may be worth more than your car Ø More people vote in a local reality TV show than in a local election Ø People have the most wonderful names: Christmas, Goodwill, Pretty, Wednesday, Blessing,Brilliant, Gift, Precious, Innocence and Given (have to add one: Goodenough! I once knew a guy called Goodenough!! Poor guy. Talk about being damned with faint praise! - N) Ø "Now now" can mean anything from a minute to a month Ø You continue to wait after a traffic light has turned to green to make way for taxis travelling in the opposite direction Ø Travelling at 120 km/h you're the slowest vehicle on the highway Ø You're genuinely and pleasantly surprised whenever you find your car parked where you left it (I know some people who can relate - coughcough CHEVON) Ø A bullet train is being introduced, but we can't fix potholes Ø The last time you visited the coast you paid more in speeding fines and toll fees than you did for the entire holiday Ø You paint your car's registration on the roof Ø You have to take your own linen with you if you are admitted to a government hospital Ø You have to prove that you don't need a loan to get one Ø Prisoners go on strike Ø You don't stop at a red traffic light, in case somebody hijacks your car Ø You consider it a good month if you only get mugged once Ø Rwandan refugees start leaving the country because the crime rate is too high Ø When 2 Afrikaans TV programmes are separated by a Xhosa announcement of the following Afrikaans program, and a Pedi ad (aaah the joys of living in a multi-lingual society - N) Ø The employees dance in front of the building to show how unhappy they are Ø The SABC advertises and shows highlights of the program you just finished watching Ø You get cold easily. Anything below 16 degrees Celsius is Arctic weather (damn STRAIGHT - N) Ø You call a bathing suit a "swimming costume" Ø You know what Rooibos Tea is, even if you've never had any Ø You can sing your national anthem in four languages, and you have no idea what it means in any of them Ø You know someone who knows someone who has met Nelson Mandela Ø You go to "braais" (barbecues) regularly, where you eat boerewors and swim, sometimes simultaneously Ø You know that there's nothing to do in the Free State Ø You actually get these jokes and pass them on to other friends from SA
I do so love the FIFA World Cup, if I was back home I'd know when every game would be televised, team stats and who the hottest players are (yes am talking bums and thighs - not ACTUAL talent here! All very superficial, you understand)...
But, alas, I have no team to support this year. I shall now wait and see which team has the best looking players (it's the only fair way to choose) and take it from there. I do have a soft spot for Japan even though they probably won't advance after last night's traumatic match vs the Aussies (3 goals in 8 minutes, who the hell would have thought it?!). And America vs the Czechs = great result! Nice one, Czechs!
Anyway, according to a Synovate survey, South Africa is craziest about the World Cup, despite not having a team in the finals (damn that Bafana Bafana!!! How embarrassing) - with South Africans being most likely to "rearrange their day in order to watch the World Cup games; use the World Cup as an excuse to avoid their household chores; and call in sick at work in order to watch matches during working hours". Yup, that sounds like home alright! They probably surveyed Capetonians (HAH!) - we're not really known to let work get in the way of our personal lives. Also, 51% of the South African women interviewed, have out and out admitted that they'll be watching because they like men in shorts (the other 49% probably lied about THEIR reasons for watching)! Yes, that sounds right too. Just yesterday I received a lovely email from one my buds back home, with piccies of some rather tasty fellas who are playing in this year's World Cup - nice one, Lou! Ta...
For more on this survey, have a look here or here. Don't know how accurate it is though *shrugs*.
Aside from the lovely boys we get to perve over, there IS the sheer excitement of watching a football match! It's a fantastic sport (not as brilliant as cricket of course, but then again, nothing is)...
Anyway that's all from me for now! Hope you're all cool and enjoying all the football!
I've decided to stop being such a lazy cow and have taken to walking/jogging every night!! Yes, I know, all you sceptics out there are wondering how long I'll be able to keep this up... but I'm here to tell you... have a little faith, man!! At least I'm trying. I fully intend to lose these damned 10 (yes that's TEN!!!!! FFS!) kgs I've gained since being here!! Aaaaaaarrghhhhh... no more quickie conbenie food solutions, no more chocolates (okay make that LESS chocolates... dunno if I have the fortitude to cut them out completely)... and regular meals - I tend to eat irregularly and really badly!
And if you're wondering why I'm telling y'all this, I figure if I make my intentions public (and as you know, one cannot get more public than The Internet), then I have less chance of copping out!
Tit Off Rectuma and... Killer Pussy (complete with the image of a woman with her thighs spread and some snaggle-toothed appendage emerging from her ... uh... nether regions on the cover) These are just a FEW of the wonderful movie choices open to me at my local video store! And these are not to be found in the sketchy porn section in the back! Noooo... these little gems are squished in between titles like Special Agent Cody Banks (personally I'd choose Tit Off over that one any day) and wholesome looking fuzzy animal flicks... you'd just be walking along and suddenly you're kind of slapped in the face with the image of bare breasts or a nun with her skirt hiked up over her nekkid butt and her boobs hanging out all over some bloke's face!! Yes, these are all actual examples!!
Okay, so I don't think I'll ever be in the right frame of mind to tell y'all about Hong Kong!! I think Mary and I had a fabulous time, despite the acute bronchitis that my stupid, measly, crappy cold turned into, thereby making my life a living hell and draining me of all energy! I know this sucked for Mary, cos she was stuck with a sick chick in one of the most exciting cities in the world! Despite that, we got to see loads... but I found the pace of the city too frenetic! I know I would have enjoyed it more if I'd had more energy and didn't have the locals staring at me like I was single-handedly re-introducing SARS into the general population whenever I coughed (which was just about every minute or so! And nothing nice and ladylike, uh uh... totally gross, exhausting, phlegmy, painful coughing! So I don't really blame folks for treating me like a pariah and, on one memorable occasion, even changing seats to get away from me!)... There went ALL my hopes of meeting some rich bloke, with his own helicopter and yacht! Sighhhhhhhh!!
Mary was fantastic, she dragged my sorry arse around and without her I would not have seen half as much as I did!! I felt terrible, because it was supposed to be a team effort but in the end it really all fell on her! Mary, YOU ROCK BABY!!!!
Anyway, we saw a lot of Hong Kong island itself and a little bit of Kowloon, but I think my favourite days were when we went to Lantau to see the giant statue of Buddha and to Lamma the gorgeous little fishing island! It was a fabulous change of pace from the city and a lot more relaxing! All in all, I'd say that it was a pretty good vacation, despite our lack of genkiness (Mary had her own ailments! Jaysus, we must be getting old!)...
I'll let the pics do the talking!! They're all mixed up! The ones at the bottom were taken the first few days! And these ones just below were taken on our last two days!! Thanks to Mary for the use of some of her pics (specially Bruce Lee, the flamingoes and a few shots of me!)...
